The Skills and Simulation Laboratory is a sophisticated learning environment. The physical layout accommodates various learning areas and stations according to the needs of the students. In the room is a seating area with movable tables to enhance visibility for any sized group of students. Watch as we transform our cozy classroom into a lab, which features a hospital bed, and exam areas, a home health studio apartment, an over-the-bed tray and cabinet stand, as well as a container for the proper disposal of sharps and pediatrics simulation. There is a video/data projector for large screen projection learning. The video/data projector allows for demonstration at the bedside to be projected onto the large screen for movie-theatre type visibility.

Nurses-in-training experience life in a hospital long before their first clinical experience. In this lab, students develop competencies in multiple simulated health care and emergency medicine settings that cross the human life span.

The Lab is home to adult & infant mannequins and many real life practice devices to include two mannequins that can be intubated and connected to a ventilator. . Additional equipment including but not limited to; IV pumps, EKG monitor simulations, medication carts/trays, crash carts, ventilator equipped mannequins’, Hoyer lifts, spine boards, and other bedside equipment add to the reality of the learning space.

To facilitate the simulated learning environment, the Lab allows faculty to direct and evaluate student performance. The lab is equipped with state-of-the-art, audio-visual equipment used for both formative and evaluative competencies. Also, the lab transforms into a debriefing room to conduct reflective discussions following a simulated learning experience.

Work in the Skills and Simulation Laboratory is integrated throughout MA Medical Services curriculum and is always available to Members. Beginning with Fundamental Basic Learning and Skills Training, which students learn a variety of nursing and emergency trauma care interventions-including but not limited to basic hygiene, repositioning, mobility, and feeding skills, injections, intravenous catheters, nasogastric tubes, Foley catheters, wound care, and oxygenation therapy, combat field medicine administration, Traumatic Brain Injury treatments, and other Emergency field skills. The IV catheter simulation station provides a virtual reality module for students for intravenous catheter placement and is part of the IV therapy and Vascular Access courses MA Medical Services provides to it students. The intravenous volumetric pumps and feeding pumps enhance the “hands-on” learning experience.
